Beyond killing: Can we find new ways to manage infection?

چکیده
The antibiotic pipeline is running dry and infectious disease remains a major threat to public health. An efficient strategy to stay ahead of rapidly adapting pathogens should include approaches that replace, complement or enhance the effect of both current and novel antimicrobial compounds. In recent years, a number of innovative approaches to manage disease without the aid of traditional antibiotics and without eliminating the pathogens directly have emerged. These include disabling pathogen virulence-factors, increasing host tissue damage control or altering the microbiota to provide colonization resistance, immune resistance or disease tolerance against pathogens. We discuss the therapeutic potential of these approaches and examine their possible consequences for pathogen evolution. To guarantee a longer half-life of these alternatives to directly killing pathogens, and to gain a full understanding of their population-level consequences, we encourage future work to incorporate evolutionary perspectives into the development of these treatments.

Beyond Cross- Cultural Philosophy: Towards a New Enlightenment
The acculturalization of humanities from the late 1980ies onwards led not only to imagined different worlds (e.g. West / Islam), postmodernity overshadowed also common grounds of world`s philosophies. Christianity and Islam share far more than what might separate them, and we find Islam in „the West “as Christianity „in the East“. The Logos of Life Philosophy as developed by Anna-Teresa Tymieni...
متن کاملOptimal control strategies for disinfection of bacterial populations with persister and susceptible dynamics.
It is increasingly clear that bacteria manage to evade killing by antibiotics and antimicrobials in a variety of ways, including mutation, phenotypic variations, and formation of biofilms. With recent advances in understanding the dynamics of the tolerance mechanisms, there have been subsequent advances in understanding how to manipulate the bacterial environments to eradicate the bacteria. Thi...

متن کاملINHIBITION OF14C UPTAKE BY CANDIDA ALBICANS: A NEW METHOD FOR INVESTIGATION OF INTRACELLULAR KILLING BY PHAGOCYTES
A radio assay employing 14C-uridine to measure the intracellular killing of Candida albicans by phagocytes is presented. The principle of this new method is that after killing of Candida albicans by phagocytes RNA synthesis stops and therefore uridine uptake is diminished whilst viable candida in cultures would take up uridine and as a result, high CPM counts can be obtained within 135 min...
متن کاملSimilar in vivo killing efficacy of polyoma virus-specific CD8 T cells during acute and chronic phases of the infection
Viral infections can be broadly divided into infections that are cleared from the host (acute) and those that persist (chronic). Why some viruses establish chronic infections while other do not is poorly understood. One possibility is that the host’s immune response is impaired during chronic infections and is unable to clear the virus from the host. In this report we use a recently proposed fr...
